Snow Day! Again!

This is my 8th winter in Georgia, and thinking back on all of this time, I've realized it has snowed more years than not since that move. This?

This is not what I signed up for when I moved to the south.

I guess it's a good thing we bought the girls cheap snow suits when we were up in Indiana at Thanksgiving, because at least they seemed to enjoy it...
(She threw that snowball at me. She's out of the will, obviously.)

She'd like you to start calling her Queen Elsa, if you don't mind.

Our trees have been ice covered since early Monday evening. It's not ideal, as the icy branches have wreaked havoc on the power lines across our county (We had no electricity overnight on Monday, but we were lucky. My in-laws STILL don't have power, almost 48 hours later.), but it's been kind of pretty (Spoken only as someone not still without power could could speak...). Plus, Brigid woke up with a fever on Tuesday morning, so all of the school and activity cancellations nicely corresponded with what would have been a couple of sick days, anyway. But still...

I'm ready for it to all go away now.

Unfortunately, it's supposed to get down to something like 17 degrees tonight, so I doubt that's going to happen.

Brigid, when she looked out the window yesterday and realized that the ice wasn't going anywhere, moaned, 'Why, Elsa?!? WHY?'. So at least we know who is to blame for this debacle. And at least we know the ice isn't affecting anyone's imagination around here...

Portrait of a Snow Day

It is snowing in Atlanta. Again. Or, as is more accurate in our little corner of the greater Atlanta area at the moment, it's wintery-mixing. Still.

I give up. I quit. I'm done. We're moving to Hawaii.

Brigid seems to be enjoying herself, at any rate, so I guess that's something...

(I'm still moving to Hawaii, though...)

Winter Weather

Did you know that it sometimes snows in the greater-Atlanta area? Because when I moved here, I did not know this. I mean, sure, my husband always tries to tell me about that one time, when he was maybe in high school or almost in high school or grade school or something, when they were able to go sledding down the streets in their neighborhood, because the city got an inch or two of snow, and everybody was out of school for a week.

I'm a little hazy on the details, because I moved to the south to get away from winter weather, and if you are not willing to move with me to Florida, you need to shut your mouth and NOT TELL ME THAT IT STILL SOMETIMES SNOWS IN GEORGIA. And if you will not do that, then I will stick my fingers in my ears and hum loudly until you stop talking.

That's just the way things work.

ANYWAY.

Aside from this one blip on the radar, things seemed to be fine in regards to Georgia's winter weather. It got cold, but not Indiana cold. There was sunshine to be seen. There were 50+ degree days here and there to remind me that spring was never far away in the south.

AND THEN WE GOT SNOWED IN AT THE END OF 2011. AND AGAIN AT THE BEGINNING OF 2014. AND I DO NOT APPROVE.

All things considered, Steve and I were lucky when the storm (snowpocalypse? snowmageddon? Atlantarctic disaster?) hit last week. We had gone into work together, despite Steve hinting around that he wanted to work from home since the weatherpeople were predicting some snow in the area, because I am one of those idiotic northerners who scoffs at a two inch snow prediction, completely disregarding the fact that for my adopted southern city, which isn't exactly great with the traffic on a normal day, two inches of snow will paralyze everything.

We left work around 1:15pm, at which point the city was already in gridlock, and after driving around in circles for an hour, trying to find any road where the traffic was moving enough to get us to the highway we take home everyday, we were still only about a mile away from the office. At this point, things were getting a little tense in the car, as I may or may not have yelled at Steve to just pick a damn direction already (Seriously. We were driving in circles. For an hour. TO GO ONE MILE.), but lucky for me I married a directional genius who decided that we just needed to start driving any way available to us to get out of the downtown mess. And that's exactly what we did.

After an hour and a half in the city, we were officially on the one highway that was still moving at that point, because everything else was so jammed, none of the usual highways were feeding into it. An hour and a half after that, we were home. My normal commute is at least an hour going home, so three hours? I will not complain.

My poor sister-in-law works a few blocks from where I work and lives a few miles south from where I live. She took our normal route home, leaving an hour earlier than Steve and I had left, and she was on the road for six or seven hours. Even then, she had to park at a drugstore and have my brother-in-law come get her in his Jeep, because she couldn't get into the neighborhood. One of my employees spent the night in a hotel lobby. My boss slept in her office. My old neighbor spent 16.5 hours in HIS CAR.

So, a three hour commute? Sure. Fine. NOT A PROBLEM.

Needless to say, we didn't go anywhere for the next two days. Steve and I worked from home (his mom stayed with us, both to watch the girls while we worked, and also to avoid being snowed in by herself while my father-in-law was off on an amazingly well-timed trip to the Keys with some college buddies), Brigid spent extended periods of time in her pajamas, and our neighborhood children systematically destroyed the 16th fareway and green behind our house, as golf course hills really are the best hills for sledding. Brigid and Steve managed to not break the wooden sled that once belonged to Steve's grandfather, which is the only sled we own, and Brigid FINALLY got to build the darn snowman she's been talking about ever since she saw the movie Frozen back in November. In a (not at all) surprising move, she named him Olaf.

By Friday, everything had melted. On Sunday, Brigid wore sandals out of the house to a Super Bowl party. And I was happy.

And now it's cold again.

Have I mentioned how much I hate winter, yet?

(There are rumors that someone has predicted possible snowfall for the area this week or next week. I will guarantee you that after what the government and schools went through last week, with children spending the night in schools because their parents couldn't get to them and cars abandoned all over every major highway in the city when traffic was at a complete standstill overnight? If there is even the THREAT of snow within a ninety mile radius of the city, everything will be cancelled. So. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the winter plays out, I guess...)

Snow Days

Well, we didn't quite have the white Christmas in Indiana that we would have liked, but my dear home state came through for us with a little surprise a few days later:

Apparently, it's fun to shovel the walk when it's not something you have to do 5-6 times every year...

Watering the Grass

Summer is just so much more fun when you can blame your desire to run through the sprinkler on the resident toddler...

What do you do when the weather is nasty?

Why, you go to the mall, of course!

I'm really amazed by my kid, sometimes. I swear, I was blessed with the greatest and most wonderful child in the history of children. Not only was she a total trooper through an extended shopping experience at Macy's (who happened to be having one of their ONE DAY SALES! and who can shop quickly at a one day sale?), she was perfectly pleasant through our food court lunch (I swear, anybody walking by would think we were feeding our kid the WORST. LUNCH. EVER. because the only thing on her tray was Chick-Fil-A chicken nuggets and french fries, but she had fruit, too, I promise. She just really, really likes her fruit and managed to shove it in her mouth quicker than I could get it on her tray.), she hung in during our trip to the American Girl store, and she didn't destroy anything while we were at the Disney store. Then, even though she'd skipped her morning nap and was beyond overdue for her afternoon nap, she happily stayed awake for the drive home, before sleeping the afternoon away in her room (I had big fears of a twenty minute nap in the car, followed by a cranky afternoon), allowing Steve and I to watch one heck of a Notre Dame basketball game without too much interruption.

And THEN! She slept until almost 10:00am on Sunday morning.

Seriously. We must have been very, very good people in a former life.

And if you're reading this post through a feed, make sure to stop by my actual site today, to check out all of the changes that took place this weekend.  A HUGE thanks to Kimmie at Blue Paper Lanterns for the redesign. She is BEYOND amazing!

Snow Day!

I feel like I've devoted many more posts to snow this winter than I'd ever expected to, what with living in Georgia and all.  Furthermore, I know I've devoted many more posts to snow this winter than I'd ever wanted to, since I moved south to get away from it all.

And yet, here I am.  Again.

And I'm tired of talking about the damn snow.  So instead, I'm actively mailing this one in today.

Look!  Cute toddler!

And there's a cute toddler with her dad!

And a cute toddler with her mom!

And a cute toddler in the worst excuse for a sled I've ever seen!

And some other pictures from inside, because it was just too cold to spend that much time outside!

Snow sucks, but Brigid is awesome.  Long live the snow day!

I don't care how 'pretty' it is...

This stuff?

This stuff needs to stop, right now.

This, after all, is Atlanta.  Not New York.  Not Boston.  ATLANTA!

And this?

This apparently isn't supposed to stop any time soon.  And in case I haven't mentioned this before, THIS IS HAPPENING IN ATLANTA!!!

I'm sure we'll have ourselves all dug out by July.  See you then...

Oh, hello there...

Well, Christmas happened.

And I absolutely meant to record all of the happenings here in my little corner of the internet, but...well...I absolutely didn't get around to it.  Instead, I went on vacation, and I got all wrapped up in celebrating the holiday, and I didn't feel like stopping the celebrating to write about any of it.  So, I guess I will now wrap it up with the following list of Things That Happened Over Christmas...

Presented in chronological order:
1) We went to the outlet mall and Wal-Mart two days before Christmas...and we lived to tell the tale.

2) We went back to the outlet mall on Christmas Eve, because we are gluttons for punishment.

3) We went to the early evening Christmas Eve mass for kids, thinking all of the other kids around Brigid would give her enough entertainment to keep her from acting up.  And they did.  Up until the closing song, when B threw her snack container halfway across the church.  Which occurred shortly after she presented me with a diaper full of poo during the Lord's Prayer.  I guess you could call it a success...

4) Brigid got waaaay too comfortable with the unwrapping of presents.  Need a present unwrapped?  She's your kid.

5) We were snowed in at the in-laws' house.  First white Christmas since 1882...I was not as thrilled with this as the rest of the greater Atlanta area appeared to be.  I MOVED AWAY FROM SNOW!!!

Or not.  Whatever.  Bastards.  It's getting harder and harder to convince my parents I moved south for the weather when this is going on...

6) Speaking of parents...my parents are visiting!  Time with my parents, without having to entertain B in the car for hours in order to get it?  Sounds like the perfect Christmas to me.

I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas, and that Santa was as good to you and your family as he was to mine!

First Snow!

This is another one of those moments when I should have grabbed the video camera instead of the regular camera, but then you would have been subjected to my weirdly high-pitched 'Brigid voice' instead of just silently adorable baby smiles, so it may have all worked out in your favor.

We had a good, heavy, Atlanta-style snowfall last weekend, meaning it snowed a little, it stuck to our deck for about 20 minutes, then it melted before the end of the day.  It wasn't the midwestern type of snowfall I grew up with, or anything, but it was still Brigid's first real experience with snow of any sort, and Steve wanted to take advantage of it.

I'd like to interrupt the picture progression for just a moment to apologize for the Ohio State hat Brigid is wearing in the photos.  It's a leftover from our time in Cincinnati, when Steve and I went to Columbus with the lovely Lynsey and some other friends to tailgate for the Ohio State - Michigan game one yearNot 'Steve and I went to Columbus to go to the game'.  We went strictly to tailgate.  Good times.  With ugly hats.  Because, let's face it...nobody likes a Buckeye.  Sorry, Lyns!

Also, I'd like to note that Brigid does, in fact, own a winter coat, as well as a hat of her own, but she went outside for literally 25 seconds, and it takes an hour and a half to get her into her own winter clothing.

She was fine with our decisions.

Especially once we got her outside...

Imagine how excited she'd be if we actually got some real snow down here?  I'd have to go out and buy her the darn boots I told Steve she didn't need this year...
